Thursday Trim the Trash: Bad Employment
Hello, friends! Welcome to “Thursday Trim the Trash,” my weekly post about eliminating the useless stuff out of your life. Yesterday we spoke about Temp Agencies and how they were harmful to their workers. Today’s post is about eliminating something very crucial to your livelihood. Today I’m going to talk getting rid of that crappy job. Having worked many, many crappy jobs in my life I see all the warning signs. I will give you a few tips to make sure you are working for a good employer and if not, who to look for.
Like I said yesterday, I take working very seriously. That is because I take my money very seriously. The reason is simple. I have been poor before and I never want to go back to that life. Good employment is the avenue to financial freedom. Bad employment is the avenue to heartache, stress, and despair. Here are a few signs of a bad employer:
1) You cannot discuss compensation freely
You should be able to discuss what you make openly with your boss. This includes regular raises, bonuses, overtime, etc. Think about it this way: If you don’t deserve a regular raise then why do you work there at all. They should be able to justify NOT giving you a raise. If they can’t then they are just cheap and you should run for cover.
2) They offer nothing in terms of benefits
This is different for certain industries and new businesses but is true for most employers. If they have been in business for any significant amount of time then why do they not offer group benefits? They should care enough about their employees to want their health and well-being covered. If they do not it comes down to them being cheap, once again. I personally have no tolerance for cheap employers and neither should you.
3) Your job is always “on the line”
If you go to work not knowing whether or not you will be on next week’s schedule then there are two options. Either you are a bad employee or you work for a bad employer. If you have been there for a good amount of time your job should never feel “on the line.” An employer that fosters an environment of job scarcity is in my humble opinion, a piece of garbage, and you should seek other employment. Your job is your livelihood. Your job is food on your table and a roof over your head. Your job is your future and if you don’t know it will be there tomorrow then move on. It will be the best decision you make!
4) Hard work never gets rewarded
I personally don’t need to be congratulated for a good job. I would rather get paid well as my reward. Despite that, hearing “You did a great job” is always nice. Busting your butt should be rewarded whether it is with money, rewards, praise, promotions or just general job security. If you see a “ceiling” to your hard work then run for the hills. I have seen many hard workers turn into lazy workers because they saw no reward for their hard work and no punishment for their co-worker’s incompetence.
You have to remember to be true to yourself when thinking about employment. If you can look yourself in the mirror and know that you put forth a good effort when you go to work then working for a great employer should be your goal. DON’T go out and quit your job if these 4 points apply to your job. DO make it your ambition to find an employer that values you and your hard work. Once you find that job hold onto it for dear life. Work your butt off, make that money and don’t make that great boss regret bringing you on. With hard work and a great job, the sky is the limit. With laziness and/or a bad job the limit is the sky.
