Why You Should Out Work Everyone

Happy Monday friends, I mean Tuesday. I hope you all had a great Canada Day weekend and got to relax and enjoy your time off. For those who didn’t have time off, me being one of them, I empathize. I also congratulate you on working on a weekend. You worked when most people were off, that is dedication. This week is all about employment and work. For the majority of us, work is the biggest or one of the biggest parts of our lives. It’s how we survive and for a lucky few it fuels our passions. Since I am all about finance, this week will be all about how work relates to your finance. What is there to talk about you might be thinking. Go to work, make money, pay bills, buy the t-shirt, case closed. That may be true for some but if you want to actually succeed it shouldn’t be that way for you. You have to be able to demand more from work, it should support your wants and needs. At the same time, you must also treat work differently if you want this to occur. My first post this week is about hard work. Someone once said: “Don’t work hard, work smart.”I call bullshit on that one. Why not do both? This post will show you a few reasons why you should always strive to outwork everyone and lands as my Tip of the Week.

1) Competition is all around you

See that guy standing next to you? Yeah, that one you eat lunch with everyday and is your work husband. He wants your job and would take it in a second. Doesn’t mean that he doesn’t like you and it doesn’t mean that you aren’t friends. All it means is that he loves himself more than he loves you. Can you really blame him? So here is the question: Why do you deserve what you have and why does he not deserve it? You better be working harder than him otherwise do you really deserve your rank? We live in a world where unions are dwindling, good employment is scarce and the bosses have all the power. You have to be busting your butt or else you won’t get what you want. Seniority is becoming a thing of the past. In fact, some places treat you worse the longer you have been there. Kind of crazy right? Every day is a battle to keep what you have and gain more in the process. Hate to sound so negative, but it is the way it is. Except it, and work within it. Don’t let anyone outwork you and take what’s yours.

2) Know where you stand

In the last paragraph, I spoke about how the competition is all around you. Well, how do you know if you are above the competition unless you are out working them? Are you putting in more hours than them? Are you taking fewer vacations and less sick days? What is the point of doing so? The point is simple. When it comes down to make your demands, will you have a leg to stand on? If you are outworking the rest of the pack then logically you deserve to get paid more than the lot of them. If you are present more often, stay later more often, then you deserve that promotion. If you are then put in a position where the promotion or pay doesn’t go in your favor than you know exactly where your employer stands. If you are busting your butt and going the extra mile for them every day and they still won’t recognize that, then it is them who is deficient and not you. You then look for someone that will reward you for your efforts. You won’t know this unless you are that person who is out-working the pack. It is that simple.

3) Working harder means more money

That guy working 60 hours a week when you are only working 30 is making more money than you. Of course there are some instances when this isn’t true, but for the most part, the more you work the more money you make. Putting in those extra hours will also stop you from spending all your money because it’s hard to spend money while you are at work. People who work harder are more likely to get promotions and pay raises. People who put more effort in their education are more likely to receive scholarships and then getting better jobs when they graduate. The richest and most successful people in the world all work very long work weeks. Dispel the myth that the rich are always on vacation and don’t do anything all day. You would puke if you saw Beyonce’s schedule, seriously.

Abundance versus Scarcity Mentalities – Budget Boss

You may not be the smartest person, the youngest or the most talented, but you can always be the hardest working. That is something you can control. When you are young you have to be busting your butt so later in life you can reap the rewards. It always boggles my mind when I hear people my age and younger complaining about a 40 hour work week. 40 hours is the basic workweek and should be done with ease. You have to remember there are people out there breaking rocks with hammers for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. The least we can do is put forth a strong effort when we do show up to work. Show up, on time, and do your best. You will succeed if that is done, trust me.
