Friday Final Reflection: March 31, 2017
Ups and Downs
It’s Finally Friday so congratulations everyone, we made it to another weekend. This week was a very blah one for me. A great friend was in town for a few days which was nice. Also, my grandma was admitted to the hospital and it looks like she might be there for a few weeks. That hits me hard as there is no one more important in my life than her. It makes me think of her story.
Enes Maria Ferreira
Born: November 18th, 1933 in the Azores Islands, Portugal
Immigrated to Canada in 1964 along with Husband and 4 children (1 on the way as well). During that time, and pretty much for the history of the islands, poverty was rampant. They also didn’t have adequate health facilities or vaccines. Proof came when my father was diagnosed with polio. They decided to leave the country and come to Canada. This proved to be a wise decision as my father was able to get treated. He learned to walk at 8 years old. My dad ended up having 2 sons. My Grandma has 5 children, 7 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. She has had a part in raising all of them.
Her story is the Great Canadian Success Story. Till this day she still barely speaks English. She worked over 30 years in Brampton at the Peel Memorial Hospital (where I was born). Her job wasn’t glamorous and it wasn’t easy. She still managed to save money and build a great life. Her husband died over 30 years ago and she still wears black every day to mourn him.
I bring her up for one reason. She shows that hard work and dedication pay off. Her life isn’t without turmoil or heartache. What it does have is a lot of love. Her traits have been passed down to her family, traits I wish I had more of. Her biggest concern is always if I have eaten or not, kind of cute. Her life of modesty and hard work is something we all can strive for.
Get well soon Vavo. Let’s all give our grandma’s, parents, siblings, and friends a hug. Have a great weekend everyone, see you next week with the “Monday Morning Money Moment.”
