Friday Final Reflection: July 7, 2017

Be a Great Employee

Welcome to my final reflection on employment week here at Budget Boss. The purpose of this week was to try and get people to really understand their job and what it offers them. I also wanted people to know what they offer to their job as well. It is important to work your butt off to get ahead, but also be able to get ahead in employment. Sometimes there are levels of employment. Sometimes you have a job just to get you to another job, one that fulfills what you need. In this post to wrap up the week, I am going to explain some things that you should NEVER do if you want success in employment. This isn’t going to be a negative post, more of an uplifting one, so be sure to get to the end.

1) Give them an excuse

Never give anyone an excuse to make you lose your job. This one ties into yesterday’s point on workplace politics. You have to know that workplaces are dynamic places with a lot of moving parts. Those moving parts are people, and people are very diverse. You have to know that those above you don’t know what’s going on in your life and to be honest they don’t really care. To be honest, why should they? They have their own life to worry about. What this means is that you can’t give anyone an excuse to make your work environment tougher than it should be. This means not being late consistently, not booking off time all the time and not being “sick” all the time. If you are sick, take time off, but never pretend to be sick because you don’t want to work. These things are the basic things you can do to keep a boss happy. If you are doing all these things, your hard work will be lost. People always remember the bad things more than the good. Each time you are late you negate ten things you do right on a daily basis. Some people are looking for excuses to make your life tougher, don’t give them one. You need a leg to stand on.

2) Never show your hand

You won’t believe how often I hear week’s before it happens that someone is quitting their job or moving on. Oddly enough they get treated poorly doing those last few weeks before they give their notice. No one should know you are leaving before your employer’s do. Remember that your job is a contract between you and them so they do deserve the respect of learning the news first. Even more important is your well-being during those last few weeks as some employers might be spiteful of your pending departure. The same goes for your ambitions of schooling or family or anything else non-work related. Why is it anyone’s business what you are doing in your life? Keep your head down and work hard, the rest is no one’s business.

3) Never be afraid

As workers, we have more rights than we think. You cannot be fired for no good reason. You cannot have your shifts cut for no good reason. You cannot be treated poorly for no good reason. With the fall of unions, the power has shifted back to the employer. For those who are anti-union think of why they were put into place in the first place. They were implemented because workplace conditions were so poor that people were literally dying on the job. We all need food and shelter and work is our way of acquiring it. Well if you have to work then the boss has all the power. It shouldn’t be that way. Employment should be a partnership, a union of worker and employer. You agree to work as best as you can for them, and they agree to provide you a place to do so. Fear shouldn’t exist in that equation. Don’t be afraid of losing your job if you are putting in an honest effort. You have to realize that fear for your job shows you something. It shows you that you either aren’t doing a good job, or your employer is someone you don’t want to work for. Either way, some evaluation has to take place.

Employment week was an interesting one here at Budget Boss. As a financial advisor, my help for my clients often revolves around their employment. What they make and what they receive in benefits often dictates the type of work I can help them with. Finding a job that fulfills most of your needs is crucial. We can then fill in the gaps and then tackle the wants. It should be a goal of everyone to find a job that takes care of them as much as they take care of it. I believe that an employment revolution is under way and what will come of it is a new way of thinking about work. Ask any industry leader like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates and they will agree that the way we have been doing business isn’t working. A movement to a better workplace is taking place and all the best companies are doing it already. This is why a minimum wage increase to me is simple. The best employers have already figured it out. Pay people right, treat people right; provide a place for them to flourish. The key is to be deserving of that sort of treatment. I mentioned it on Tuesday, work your butt off and the world is yours. Don’t forget that!

Thanks for reading my post today and I hope you enjoyed employment week here at Budget Boss. Tune in next week for my “Monday Morning Money Moment.” Have a great weekend friends!
