Be a Minimalist, You will be Happier
Welcome back to my “Monday Morning Money Moment” friends. I hope you all had a great weekend full of sun and fun. I’m going to start this week off with a discussion about minimalism. Some of the most influential and wealthy people have strived to be minimalists. Webster’s defines minimalism as: “a style or technique that is characterized by extreme sparseness or simplicity.” Where this can be effective in your own life is in regards to possessions and money. Striving to eliminate all the unnecessary things in your life can be liberating and really help you out financially. I am going to mention a few minimalists throughout history and why it worked for them.
Albert Einstein
The well-known physicist is best known for the theory of relativity. He also strived to live a very simple life. He didn’t own much clothing as you could probably tell by all the pictures of him. He also gave most of his money away. He did have a few guilty pleasures including cigars and instruments but for the most part, he lived very simply. Einstein spent much of his travels sleeping on friend’s couches. Now I don’t recommend giving all your money away, I do suggest not oversaturating yourself with possessions. Einstein was a genius, right?
Steve Jobs
He was the founder of Apple and a strong believer in minimalism. It kind of makes sense with all the products Apple produced. The beauty of them is their simplicity when doing complex tasks. It’s why we love our iPhones and iPads. He apparently had very little furniture and even had a picture of Albert Einstein hanging on the wall, go figure. Highly successful and highly motivated, Jobs had a good thing going on and turned Apple into the mega-company it is today.
Leonardo Da Vinci
One of the most famous artists of all time, Da Vinci took pleasure in feeding his friends. Rich or Poor he always had room at his table for them all. It reminds me of my grandma a little bit. Da Vinci once said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” That to me is very profound! All the nicest homes I see have very little clutter and look super chic. I imagine he expressed his creativity in his art and not in where he lived.
The example of successful people living the minimalist life shows how powerful it can be. I know I need to cut down on a few luxuries myself. Most people can think of a few things that they can get rid of. The cool thing about it is that it will hit your wallet in a great way. Striving to be like very successful people is never a bad thing. The secret is to take a few things from their life and apply it to yours. Tomorrow for my “Tip of the Week,” I will show you a few things that you can do financially to be minimalistic. Thanks for reading friends and have a Great Day!
