Video Games Are Stupid
Happy Hump Day Friends! Welcome back to “Wednesday WTF,” my weekly rant on things that waste your money. Today’s victim is virtually a bank account drainer. Video Games have turned from a late-night pastime into an all-day, everyday obsession. I hate to sound like a Grandpa here, as I tend to, but back in my day video games were for rainy days. Back in those days, it was only Donkey Kong and Mario anyway. These days’ video games are more real than reality, technology wise. I find two distinct problems with video games and what they have become. In this post, I will go over them for you. I know it’s 9 AM so if you have a controller in your hand, put it down for a second.
1) Damn, they are expensive, absurdly expensive!
As I write this I am looking at a Best Buy flyer. When did video game systems start costing so much? The PlayStation 4 console costs $499 plus tax! My first car cost $500, just saying. The cheapest console I see costs over $300. I personally cannot see justifying spending that much on a video game system. For the actual games themselves, they are ranging from $50 – $100 or more. Look at some of the names of these games too. Grand Theft Auto 5, Resident Evil 7, FIFA 17, Final Fantasy 7, etc, etc. Notice how all of these titles are sequels in a long line. Makes you think, how many people have all 17 FIFA games? Do they really like soccer that much? In my humble opinion, no one does. That leads me to my next point:
2) Video Games have become an addiction for some….
Smoking, drinking, drugs, gambling, eating. You can now add playing video games as to one of those harmful addictions. I know several people that spend most of their days playing video games. I can name several things more productive you can be doing with your time. Exercising, playing sports, spending time with family or friends, a part-time job (or a job period), volunteering, reading a book, walking through the park, staring at the wall, combing your hair, climbing a tree and many others. You have to ask yourself: Am I being as productive as I can be? You also have to remind yourself that these games are meant for children, you know little people with no responsibilities. When they make a Final Fantasy 7 they don’t make it trying to woo a new video game user. They make it knowing you are addicted to the other versions. That is something else to think about.
Like many other posts I have written I am not saying you shouldn’t own video games. I am also not saying that you shouldn’t buy expensive video game consoles, sort of. I personally don’t think anyone should own these devices but that’s my personal opinion. The point of the post is to make you understand that are several places you can be spending your valuable time and money that would be more productive. If you don’t have any savings, don’t have an emergency fund, find yourself always broke, live in a crappy apartment, are missing work consistently or don’t work at all or enough, are over the age of 15, are overweight or many other things than video games might not be for you. If you are meeting all your responsibilities then, by all means, play a video game here and there. I know I won’t and that doesn’t make me better than anyone. For me, life is crazy enough, wizards and zombies don’t do it for me anymore.
Thanks for reading my post today and tune in tomorrow for “Thursday Trim the Trash Time,” my weekly post about things you can eliminate from your budget. Have a great day friends!
