Friday Final Reflection: Fear and Motivation

This week saw the termination of several key members of my team at London Life. The announcements came as a surprise to them and everyone else. Some team members will choose early retirement, others will just move on. It is never easy to say goodbye to friends, especially ones you have worked with for years. As a new advisor, I hadn’t had the time to build strong relationships with the people we lost. I do however know we lost some very talented, hard-working and caring people.

What do you take from something like this? Some people get angry, some get sad. Others choose to get cynical and jaded. Something like this takes me in another direction. When bad things happen to good people I think it has to motivate. Turn the pain into strength. Turn the fear into pride. Turn the loss into a win.

We have two options when the world shits on us. You can be a miserable sap who gives up or you can fight. Get stronger, get smarter, get tough, and get right. Let the anger fuel you, not destroy you.

Life’s a bitch. Straight up, no debates. My pops drilled this into my head at an early age. Hearing this as a 5-year-old wasn’t pretty, but he was right. No one owes you a damn thing. Your place is always temporary and no one is irreplaceable.

Despite that last paragraph, life is also beautiful. It’s all we have so you have to make the best of what you have and always strive for more. Someone who doesn’t appreciate what you bring to the table has lost. There will be someone that fully loves it, so seek them out. Don’t take anything for granted, but make sure you always have your rightful place at the table.

To my colleagues that are gone, best of luck. I will miss you and I wish you the best. Thanks for reading my weekly final reflection. Tune in next week for the “Monday Morning Money Moment.” Have a great weekend friends!
