Friday Final Reflection: Value
Welcome to the end of the week friends. Friday means it’s time for my final reflection on the week. During the week I touched on a few topics including procrastination, excess and success. I think I stumbled upon a theme with these posts and didn’t even know about it until today. I think the theme this week comes down to a simple, yet complex, idea. I’m talking about value. It is a tough concept sometimes. It can be hard to determine what value actually is. Really think about it, what is anything really worth?
The most simple answer to that is something is worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. That to me is bullshit. Just because someone is willing to pay a crazy amount for a product doesn’t mean it actually worth that. I will bring up my favorite sport, football because it makes things easier. Brock Osweiler signed a 4 year/$72 Million contract in 2016. The year before he signed that deal he passed for only 10 touchdowns and threw 6 interceptions. This past year, his first under this new contract, he passed for 15 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. Did Houston get value for their money? The answer is no. The question of value is always complex but I’m going to try to break it down for you.
Value includes knowledge. Providing someone with things that they may not know is extremely valuable. Knowledge is power and it is obviously impossible to know everything. Someone who is of value to you is someone that can teach you things. To be a source of information is priceless so surround yourself with people who teach you things. Chances are people exactly like you can’t do that. Seek out those different than you for this.
Hard work is part of value. In order to earn what you make, there has to be value. What that means is that no one can lose in any transaction that is made. You have to make sure you are working harder than your competition. I learned at an early age from my mom and dad that you can’t achieve anything worthwhile without working hard for it. Make sure you align yourself with people that work as hard as you do or else the relationship will always be unequal. When you work hard then you can determine your own worth as well, which is essential in life.
Fairness is also key. So many people are caught up with money that they forget what is fair. I also had that beat into me at a young age. You have to know that what you do is fair, and integrity based. If you can’t be fully transparent about what you do then it is not fair. It should be known and accepted, or else it’s not fair. Transparency is paramount to value. Unknowns make things unfair, always.
It should be everyone’s goal in life to be of value. The reason for this is because value begets value. When you are of value you accept nothing less of those around you. There will always be shady people in the world. That cannot be avoided. What you can avoid is how you go about your life. Once you know that you are of value to your contemporaries you will settle for nothing less. It is then that you can truly expect the best in life because you know you deserve it.
Have a great weekend friends! Tune in on next week for my “Monday Morning Money Moment.” Thanks for reading.
