Wednesday WTF: Healthy Food versus Junk Food
Happy “Hump Day” everyone! Today’s Wednesday WTF is all about how much healthy food costs. This problem is one that is not getting better sadly. The real puzzling part of it is that many food items that we grow right here in southern Ontario are some of the most expensive. Things like tomatoes, peppers, asparagus, and broccoli are becoming very pricey. On the flip side, junk food is fairly cheap even as food prices rise. Here I will compare 2 meals with price points:
Healthy Meal:
Fresh Chicken Breast: $3
2 Bell Peppers: $4
Yellow Onion: $1
Mushrooms: $2
Whole Wheat Pasta: $3
Pasta Sauce: $3
Head of Romaine: $3
Tomato: $2
Cucumber: $2
Total: $23
Unhealthy Meal:
Big Mac Meal: Burger, Fries, Drink
Total: $9
With prices like this, it is no wonder that many people are overweight. For people in the lower income bracket, it is very challenging finding healthy meals, especially to feed an entire family. What I’ve done is buy a cube freezer and try to buy items in bulk. When something goes on sale, I’m there stocking up. Frozen veggies have become part of my routine as well. In my opinion, the government should step in and make it easier for people to eat healthier. Until that day, do your best to get the food you need at a reasonable price.
Thanks for reading my post and tune in tomorrow for “Thursday Trim the Trash” day. Have a great day!
