Thursday Trim the Trash Time: March 23, 2017

Harmful Human Beings

Last week I introduced everyone to Trim the Trash Time. During most of these posts, I will discuss things that are eating away at your bottom line. Today, however, I will discuss people that are eating away at your budget. Unfortunately, people can crash your financial plan far quicker and more dramatically than Starbucks. These people are so enveloped in their own situations that you and your money is not of their concern. Watch out for these “Harmful Humans.”

1) The “Loser Boyfriend”….. or girlfriend

This is one I see a lot. Many people are carrying someone along with them that is not pulling their own weight. That doesn’t mean that your mate has to make as much as you. What it means is that they should be at least working as hard as you do at whatever they are doing. If it can’t be even financially, then it better be effort wise. You both should be on the same path and put in the same effort towards the relationship, including finances. Also, here is a little word of advice to all the men out there, pick up the restaurant tab. She spent a lot of money to look that good, we just shower and put on clean clothes. #Truth

2) The “Enabler” Friend

We all have that one friend, or two, that when we go out with them we know it’s on. Better bring the VISA because it’s gonna get pricey. When you are trying to budget and save for the future it may be best to take a break from these people. You could also plan hangouts on your terms, ie: a bottle of wine and a night in. Don’t let wild friends stop you from your financial goals.

3) 40-year-old Basement Dwellers

It is essential for some parents to cut the umbilical chord. Simply put you are not helping them by not preparing them for life. Life is tough and no one gets anywhere by having everything handed to them. It is slightly different these days but the same principles apply. Make sure your child is taking the right steps to make it on their own. If they are not maybe being in your home is not the best place for them anyway.

Thanks for listening to my take on how to Trim the Trash. Tune in tomorrow for my final reflections for the week. Happy Saving Friends!
